These upside down apple tarts are a perfect balance of sweet, tangy apples and buttery, flaky pastry. They’re baked on a sheet pan, making them easy to serve for a crowd or enjoy as a delightful dessert for yourself!
Ingredients:
- 4-5 medium Apples (your choice, such as Granny Smith, Honey crisp, or Fuji)
- 2 tablespoons Honey
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 cup Brown Sugar (packed)
- 4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter (slices)
- 2 Puff Pastry Sheets (thawed)
- 1 Egg
- Pinch of Salt (optional)
Preparation:
1. Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a half sheet pan with silicone lined mat or lightly grease it with butter or non-stick spray.
2. Prepare the Apple Topping:
- Core and slice the apples into thin wedges (about 1/4-inch thick). You can leave the skins on for added texture and color.
3. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut the puff pastry into squares or rectangles that will fit comfortably on your sheet pan. You can cut them into 6-8 pieces, depending on the size you want for your tarts.
OPTIONAL:
- Gently score a border around each puff pastry square (about 1 inch inside the edges) to create a raised edge once baked, if desired.
Instructions:
1. Make the Base:
- Drizzle a thin layer of honey directly onto the lined baking sheet, spreading it evenly in the area where you will place the apple slices. (You’ll want enough to lightly cover the sheet but not too much as it will become too sticky.)
2. Arrange the Apples:
- Place the thinly sliced apple slices on top of the honey in a single layer, arranging them to form the base of your tart.
3. Add Cinnamon, Brown Sugar & Slice of Butter:
- Sprinkle ground cinnamon lightly over the apples.
- Add about 1-2 teaspoons of brown sugar on top of each apple slice, for added sweetness and caramelization.
- Cut a small square of butter and place on top.
4. Assemble the Tart:
- Place the puff pastry over the apple slices, tucking the edges slightly around the apples.
5. Egg Wash:
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg with a tablespoon of water to create an egg wash.
- Brush the egg wash over the tops of the puff pastry squares to give them a beautiful golden-brown finish.
6. Bake:
- Place the sheet pan in the preheated (400ºF) oven and bake for 15 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up, and the apples are tender and caramelized.
7. Upside Down:
- Once baked, remove the tarts from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Using a flat spatula, turn over the tarts and place on another dish if desired.
- If any apple slices stick to the pan, gently remove them with a spatula and place them back on top of the tarts.
8. Serve:
- Serve the Sheet Pan Upside Down Apple Tarts warm. You can drizzle with a little extra honey or serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
These Sheet Pan Upside Down Apple Tarts are an easy and delicious dessert that looks impressive but requires minimal effort. Enjoy the warm, caramelized apples paired with the light, flaky puff pastry—perfect for any occasion!
